Eating Healthy on a Budget

Eating Healthy on a Budget

Eating healthy doesn't have to break the bank!
While it's true that buying organic and wholesome products can be a bit on the expensive side, there are ways in which you can save a pretty penny. It just takes a bit more planning and knowing when and what to buy.
Keep reading below for my tips on eating healthy on a budget!

Plan your meals!

...and your snacks too! You will be surprised by how much you can cut your grocery bill, by simply planning out your weekly meals. More often than not, we shop on empty stomach or go into the store without even a grocery list. The result: 3 bags of brussels sprouts (when you only needed one for your meals!) and a sneaky bag of Cheetos (because you were getting hangrier by the minute!)
To make it easier, I have created a blank weekly meal prep template for you!

Buy in Season

Buy veggies that are in season or on sale (but make sure they look fresh!). Cook what you can and freeze the rest. Frozen fruits and veggies are just as good and nutritious as frozen ones! I always chop and freeze my spinach, bananas, mango, pineapple and then grab a handful for easy breakfast smoothies. Here is a list of freezer-friendly produce:

  • Spinach
  • Kale
  • Onion
  • Pumpkin
  • Brusselsprouts
  • Green beans
  • Cauliflower
  • Broccoli
  • All kinds of berries
  • Bananas
  • Mango
  • Pineapple
  • Kiwi
  • Peaches
  • Cherries
  • Apples

Visit Farmer's Markets

Large food store chains tend to offer steeper prices. Why not grab your cute shopping tote and hop over to your local farmers market? Veggies and fruits are usually half the price, plus - if you get there right before closing time, you might save a couple more bucks! Sellers tend to lower their prices, so they won't have to pack it all up again for the ride home.

Buy in Bulk

Buying products in bulk is not only cheaper and eco-friendly (because you forego the packaging), but you can also make sure you buy just the amount you need! A number of products can be bought in bulk - think coffee, dried fruit, nuts, healthy flours, even chia seeds and quinoa!

Calorie dense foods

Oats, peas, squash, beans and other high in fiber foods are healthy, filling and don't break the bank! Healthy nut butters like sesame tahini, almond butter and peanut butter are delicious and can be added to snacks and dishes, making for a richer taste and more filling meal.

Bonus tip: Grow your own herbs! Fresh herbs can be expensive (especially the more exotic kind), so why not grow your own? There are some great kits that come with seeds, pots and easy instructions. All you need is a sunny spot in your apartment/ house and a bit of patience. :)
